About the Northern Territory Legal Aid Commission (NTLAC)

The Northern Territory Legal Aid Commission (NTLAC) is an independent statutory body. There is a Legal Aid Commission in each state and territory.

NTLAC usually only assists people living in the NT or with a family law problem connected to the NT. We can also help people to get assistance from legal aid in other states.

NTLAC provides a range of legal services to people in the NT including:

  • Free legal information by phone (Helpline 1800 019 343);
  • Free initial legal advice in person in Alice Springs, Darwin, Katherine, Palmerston and Tennant Creek;
  • The Family Law Duty Lawyer service;
  • Family Law Conferencing;
  • Free Community Legal Education, Information and Publications on a range of topics.
